Stay or just visit. Gaol can be fun.

Most of us spend our lives doing the right thing to avoid going to gaol. There are some pretty compelling reasons however to visit a gaol.

Scattered around Australia you will find a few prisons (of the old stone variety) that offer a great experience for the traveller.

Some are simply museums or historic attractions but others allow you to stay the night - or the week if thats your thing. Some offer an authentic prisoner experience while others have been improved upon to a point of being luxurious.

Australia - (South Australia to be exact) owns what has just been voted the world's best ex-gaol accommodation. You can read the press release here or click here to visit the website of The Old Mount Gambier Gaol

If you are visiting Melbourne, The Old Melbourne Gaol presents an interesting outing and has all sorts of fun things like night time ghost tours

If you're visiting Tasmania Port Arthur penal colony is a must visit and while there base yourself in great accommodation at Abs By The Bay.

Just south of Sydney on the old Hume Highway, the Old Berrima Gaol has tours available and the pub next door serves the best sticky date pudding you're ever likely to have.

In Perth the Fremantle Prison has tours through thier tunnels and a Spooky Torchlight tour to heighten the senses.
