New South Wales & Sydney

Drawings by Simon Mclean

New South Wales is where Australia's european settlement began with the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, so as you might expect there is a lot of historic significance.

The sheer beauty of the NSW coastline is something to behold and regardless of whether you go north or south, you will be treated to spectacular rock formations, bays, inlets and beaches.

Inland too is a treasure trove of mountains, caves, bush and wildlife.

 Sydney.

As you might expect Sydney is all about the harbour and there are so many activities and things to do that overlook and use the harbour as part of your day out.

Taronga Park Zoo is a short ferry ride from Circular Quay where all ferry rides begin from.

A ferry ride to Manly is a must do as you will traverse much of the harbour, see the Bridge and the Opera House, the expensive harbour front homes and of course Manly itself with its cafes and ocean beach.

Climb the bridge! Bridgeclimb is a world renowned activity and can be done with just a couple of spare hours.

Luna Park is tucked under the bridge on the north side, just a 5 minute ferry ride from Circular Quay.

Don't forget the many bays and beaches that are in all directions and of course Sydney has many wonderful beaches, the most famous being Bondi - about 20 minutes from the city.

Sydney is a cosmopolitan city in every way and has many different shopping and dining precincts. Walking distance from the city hotels is Darling Harbour and Star City.

The list is endless and you will no doubt find plenty to fill your time in Sydney.

Tip.. allow yourself more time.

A Weekend Escape plan in Coogee -

( One of Sydney's beaches.)

Everyone needs an escape to the beach every now and then. Coogee is the perfect destination for couples and families – boasting some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the world, fabulous walking trails, interesting festivals, and first class accommodations. And it is all located just minutes from Sydney’s Central Business District.

A short 15 minute drive from The City will take you to the sandy coastline called Coogee, where you can enjoy a relaxing and interesting weekend, weeklong holiday, or more if you choose. It is a perfect getaway that offers many activities, events, and a whole lot of beach time. Here are some choices you might consider: ·

The coastal walk from Bondi to Maroubra – “Sydney’s Seaside Village,” as Coogee is called, is the perfect place for a long leisurely stroll.  The easily-accessible beach walk from Bondi to Maroubra is a great way to take in views of the sandy surf, the rocky cliffs, and the eclectic seaside buildings that line the beaches.  The twelve kilometer stretch is clearly marked and offers some of the most breathtaking views available.   ·

Noteworthy landmarks – The Bali bombing memorial is a stunning and beautiful tribute to the casualties of Bali. It is also one of the most popular landmarks in Coogee, and is located at Dolphin Point. Some of the Bali victims were members of the Dolphins rugby team; the Coogee Oval, where rugby teams practice, is another landmark worth a visit. Make sure to stop by the Wylie Baths to enjoy a leisurely swim in a near-Olympic sized walled off swimming cove if relaxing in calm waters appeals to you.   ·

Festivals and Events – Coogee hosts several exciting events throughout the year. The Coogee Family Fun day is extremely popular for people of all ages, is sponsored by the Coogee Chamber of Commerce every December, and offers live performances, fresh markets, and contests for all. If you are visiting in February, be sure to enjoy the Coogee Arts Festival, where you will find everything from films to theatre performances.

Dining options – There is a vast array of dining choices available in Coogee, including exquisite Italian, casual beach burritos, delectable ceviche, and chic grills. Most are within walking distance on Coogee Bay Road and offer stunning ocean views.

Accommodations – Once you get to Coogee, you will likely want to extend your weekend to fully experience all the area has to offer.  The Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach is one of the best options – offering spectacular views, luxurious amenities, and every convenience you could wish for. The location is perfect to enjoy all aspects of Coogee and is the perfect home base for your beach getaway.
