Hughenden Boutique Hotel is the perfect location to explore the best of Sydney
The Hotel is a gracious Victorian residence, which is associated with Australia’s first philosopher, Barzillai Quaife. It was built by Dr. Frederick Harrison Quaife in 1876 and is located on Queen Street at the crossroads of Woollahra and Paddington, inside what is now a conservation area featuring the largest expanse of Victorian architecture in Australia.
The Victorian Italianate Hughenden still showcases many original grand building features including black marble fire places, servents bells, decorative staircases and bannisters, chandeliers and Dr Quaife’s initials still etched in Lombardic script in the glass above the entrance.
In the 1870s, Dr Quaife was an important social and political figure in the, then young, NSW colony, as a founding father of the British Medical Association.
After the Quaifes, The Hughenden commenced a cheered history – Masonic hall, guest house, nurses home, a dance hall and the Riviere ladies College.
By 1990, it had fallen into a state of disrepair, half hidden behind a concrete fence. It was discovered by children’s author Susanne Gervay OAM. With the legacy left behind from her parents, who escaped communism in Hungary to find a safe haven in Australia, the Gervay family began the lengthy restoration of the Hughenden. Melding European arts culture with Victorian tradition, the Hughenden would become a uniquely Australian arts and literary hotel.
Today, the Hughenden is a fully restored boutique hotel, offering guests a welcoming base from which to explore Sydney. With a culture of personal service, and a focus on guest experience, the Hughenden offers an elegant alternative to chain hotels.
With free Wi-Fi and a range of room styles and types, from cosy rooms to the Manor Suite, family apartments to pet-friendly rooms, there is a room to suit nearly any guest.
